Original?

There’s no such thing as an original idea.
Great design is bringing together things that have never been brought together before. Going beyond the obvious to find the essence of what we are working with. What can be brought together, in what way, to find something new and exciting? Everywhere I look I see an opportunity for experimentation or inspiration.

	plus one is a weekly club night built around a simple idea; bring someone with you. The name itself is an invitation. It’s about inclusivity, not exclusivity, so the visual identity doesn’t try to fit into a niche aesthetic. It sits somewhere more neutral, aiming to feel familiar to anyone, while still carrying enough attitude to hold its own in a serious club space.

My role covered the full visual direction of the project. I worked closely with the client to build the identity from scratch. Colour, typography, layout and motion design included. The brief asked for no hard edges, no defined shapes, medium to low contrast. The brand name needed to sit front and centre and the main focus was on subtlety, space and confidence.

The result is a minimal system built around a wide wordmark and a dispersed grain that forms a quiet plus shape. It’s soft, atmospheric and simple, but still textured enough to feel alive. The grain becomes a recurring visual language across the identity, giving a sense of movement and depth without drawing to much attention.

Each week uses the same structure but changes in colour and tone. Backgrounds alternate between ivory and charcoal, and each edition introduces a new accent colour and motion graphic. 


In motion, the grains drift and fade in sync to music produced by the headlining artist for that week.

The layout is strict but quiet. Dates, venues and lineups are placed with restraint, using simple sans-serif type and consistent spacing to keep everything balanced. The identity feels like it belongs in the club scene but doesn’t rely on trend. It’s understated on purpose.


plus one doesn’t shout to get attention. It already has it.

	General Issue 2021
is a modern interpretation of Civilian Clothing Orders 1941 (CC41), the British
governments’ national utility scheme in place during World War II. The scheme
was designed to offer quality control of cloth and clothing at a reasonable, controlled
price. Each of the participating couturier’s was to design a dress, a skirt, a
suit, and a coat made of Utility cloth and under strict austerity regulations.
There was also a limit of the number of designs to save on labour and increase
longer production runs. 32 designs in total.

	CC41 wasn’t a
uniform it was civilian clothing. The regulation ensured that manufactures
supplied well made products at a reasonable price.&#38;nbsp; The Utility Scheme continued in Britain until
1952 and included garments as well as novelty essentials such as blankets,
pencils, lighters, furniture, and ben linen.


	Eighty years later
GI21 is inspired by the strict regulations of this programme. The concept is
about rationing and standardisation, following orders that inform the design of
32 modern day utility items. Utility is about function but it’s history stems
from standardisation. You want your clothes to be tough and dependable and the
identity of General Issue 2021 aims to represent this reliability through
simple but ‘reliable’ branding. Originally the initials G.I. were used to
describe the soldiers of the United States Army but have also been interpreted
as “Government Issue” or “General Issue” for their general items of equipment.
As a brand GI21 embraces the military connotations as they align closely with
the essence of utility. The brand is about what is essential in 2021, nothing
that’s not.

	The brand identity of El Sabor, which means ‘the flavour’ in Spanish, is strongly influenced by Spain, which has the largest area of vineyard plantation worldwide. I have gone with the colour red, as it has obvious ties to Spain thanks to the iconic San Fermin festival and the national flag. However, to produce a more suave aesthetic, I avoided the vibrant playful red of Spains flag, opting for a darker red resembling the colour of wine. The logo states the name in a bold sans serif display font and is accompanied by a simple icon that aims to encapsulate the core of this establishments love for wine. The swirl represents swirling liquid around in a glass, an action common before smelling and tasting wine. To further tie the identity of this wine bar to Spain, I have included film photos, taken by a close friend of mine, Daniel Roccioletti, on his travels throughout Spain over the past two years.

	The simple iconic nature of the brand will hopefully propel El Sabor’s rapid increase in popularity among Melbourne’s wine bar scene, which speaks to the power of a well crafted and appealing visual identity, and how this can drive the success of such a business.

	Pins n’ Needles is a musical collective based in Naarm, that showcases artists and selectors through online DJ set vidos and events. I have done all the design for the collective to date and for the foreseeable future, from the brand conception all the way through to promotional material for their YouTube videos and events. 	The logo I have created has two versions, one clearly stating the name of the collective and the second an abbreviation of the name which stands as the main graphic logo. The bottom of the letters on the logo aims to pay homage to the stylus/needle used on vinyl turntables, a staple of the Pins n’ Needles collective. The logo also takes inspiration from elements of the music scene in Naarm - a diverse range of rhythms, tempos and genres is represented in the uniform yet unexpected curves of the lines that make up the letters.

	I have also created a typeface to service Pins n’ Needles media that is inspired by the Skins compression wear logo. The typeface is used in promotional content on social media as well as print advertising for events and Sip n’ Spins. The typeface is sleek with all letters being the same height to give a fast and futuristic aesthetic. For artists Sip n’ Spin artwork (above) I have taken snaps of their musical influences and layered them on top of one another, colour treated them and placed line graphics over the top, resulting in a netting like effect, another graphic element that has become a staple in the collectives branding.

	I also designed the event promotion material for Pins n’ Needles’ first event. I used the same design elements as previous material however I incorporated the use of motion graphics &#38;amp; sound into this design to

	This project aims to explore the identity of an architectural project by
creating an interpretive and experimental publication in response to one of the
entries submitted for the 2021 Victorian Architecture Awards. 8 Yard House is a residential project
designed by Studio Bright and built in 2020 on Wurundjeri Country. The house
suitable for a large family is located on a double fronted site in Fitzroy
North. The heritage overlay reflects Studio Bright’s ongoing desire to make
adaptable family houses that connect as much as possible with the outdoors. I
have tried to carry though this connection with nature by using a recycled
paper stock as well as the general inclusion of earthy tones throughout that
are captured in the images of the property.

	The publication
itself is a book of poetry. Poems are to express emotion and lived experience.
For me personally I read them in a very calm tone. Although they can express
extreme sadness or happiness, joy or loathing or anger I always read them in a
slow clam state. Idea of poetry to me in general is relaxing and calm, yet it
has a sensitive or tender amount of beauty to it. I have the same feelings
about 8 Yard House. It expresses so much meaning and emotion yet the feeling it
gives me is tranquility. This could be to do with the tones of the house and
the concentration and emphasis given to outdoor spaces.

	The laser cut
front cover is a clear portrayal of the front façade of the house. The bold
perforated cream coloured brick is the first impression you get of the house
before walking in and I wanted this to be the same with my publication.

	Inside the book sans serif headings are posed against serif body
text to show contrast as well as the visual harmony of the house. It is also,
to represents the heritage constraints that the house must follow yet the
contemporary flare it contributes back to the street. I feel like poems
themselves, naturally must be written in serif. The more humanist typeface
better conveys emotion. Lots of white space represents a clear head – the
feeling the house gives you in general through the peaceful vibe it radiates.
This is the overall emotion I am trying to stimulate, as this is the emotion 8
Yard House stimulates in me.

	Melbourne
Cinémathèque is a self-administered and membership-driven organisation that
aims to present films in the medium they were created and to screen films the
way they would have originally screened. Every year the film festival takes on
a new identity that is chosen by the company from a pool of submissions
designed by Monash third year Communication design students.

	My identity uses
simple illustrations that are representative of typical stills seen in classic
films. I have created five different posters that can be shown as a set or
independently, using bright colours to help them stand out among other posters
that may feature alongside.

	Drawing from elements used in my posters, I developed a layout for
the 2021 Melbourne Cinémathèque programme of screenings using provided content.
This part of the project required us negotiate approximately 6,000 words of
text and 40+ images. I have applied typographic styles and again used bold
colour to establish hierarchy and differentiate seasons, whilst at the same
time upholding the creative integrity of my initial graphic treatment.

I have also developed at set of season specific digital screens to
be shown in theatre. These screens list all films shown in a season and feature
the linework illustrations drawing and erasing themselves taking advantage of the digital application.

	This assignment included a self-initiated brief and a package design outcome in response. I chose to create a fictitious brand called Diatomaceous Earth, a company with a miracle product (diatomaceous earth) that has many health benefits. The firms core values include sustainability, good health, and ethical sourcing. The brands positioning is a clean natural health product that does good for the earth and its people. For their skin care exfoliation product they want a package that is sustainable, aesthetically beautiful, ethically sourced, non-deceptive and that conveys a premium product personality.&#38;nbsp;

The package I have designed is handmade from unfired clay, so there are zero emissions in production, and the material is 100% recyclable. When it comes to branding I have gone for a considered minimal aesthetic to let the beauty of the ceramic package and the quality of the product shine through. I have presented the brand name in a humanist display serif aligning with the earthy nature of the product, and for the body type a humanist sans serif aiding readability at small sizes. As it is a new to the world brand, I have designed a logo featuring a sun that represents energy, power, positivity, and clarity in life, encasing the stylised letters ‘D and E’.

Choosing to package this face scrub in handmade ceramic art gives the bespoke and personal feeling desired by consumers of high-end products and evokes an appropriate organic tone considering the nature of the brand. Furthermore, it allows Diatomaceous Earth to demand a premium price point. Minimalism depicts quality and luxury without undermining the product’s function and, in this case, the bespoke ceramic packaging. Overall I hope the packaging leaves the lasting idea that Diatomaceous Earth is a product that will nurture your health through the use of natural ingredients.

	In this project I have used photography and
composition to create an aesthetic aligning with the notion of miscellaneous. This
word suggests a mix of different items with a feeling of randomness to it. So, with
the use of traditional analogue homeware instruments, this is what I tried to
create.

	I think the style I have designed would work
wonderfully for the marketing of a conceptual kitchen utensils brand. The
photographs are stripped back with a neutral white background allowing the
