Sharing Nixon

Exhibition Identity
2021

“John Nixon was a great sharer. Whether it was an unexpected gift from the tote bag he always seemed to have on his shoulder, the opportunity to collaborate in a new creative venture or the enthusiastic endorsement of an artist’s latest work, Nixon was a man known for his generosity, rigorous intellect, and good humour.” - The Guardian.

This project is focused on the design of an identity for an exhibition within the State Library of Victoria, as part of its ambitious expansion. The expansion involves the refurbishment of the library’s heritage spaces, along with the creation of new gallery spaces upon the existing site. To inaugurate these new spaces, the library has committed to a series of short and long-term exhibitions, open to the public. One such exhibition will showcase the archives of an Australian person, group, or collective of cultural significance. My project showcases an archive of Australian artist John Nixon’s work.

The title of the exhibition has a double meaning. Obviously, the exhibition shares Nixon’s art but it also tells of a man who had a passion for connecting with people. The design of the logo and identity aims to be inspired by the simple geometric shapes of his work however does not use colour as to not mimic it. The exhibition itself also shows the work of his contemporaries. This highlights the notions of sharing and collaboration which is represented in digital applications through the building of the logo.

Final applications of the identity also included a Teaser Film. See below.
